    Anonymous claims arrive

From July 1, 2026, a new Virginia law allows winners to claim anonymously: the Lottery will not publicly release the winner’s name, hometown or amount won without written permission, though winners may authorize a photo for publicity. Prizes over $100 claimed at a Lottery office are still checked for delinquent debts such as back taxes or child support.

    Brackets unchanged since 1990

Code of Virginia § 58.1-320 has taxed income at 2% to $3,000, 3% to $5,000, 5% to $17,000 and 5.75% above since 1990. The 4% the Lottery withholds on prizes over $5,000 is $40,000 on a $1,000,000 prize; the Virginia tax is $57,243. Marylanders and District residents who play in Virginia pay their own jurisdiction’s tax; the District cannot tax its nonresidents.
